What we drive by category

Driver of vehicles by license

See in a simple way what you can drive without a license and with each basic driving license category. For cases with trailers, PEI or old driving licenses, it is advisable to check before starting the process.

Important note

The vehicle's license counts

Cubic units, kW, maximum speed, maximum permissible mass and positions must be shown correctly on the registration. If a vehicle seems borderline, we always check its details before considering it covered by a category.

What do we drive without a driver's license?

Mopeds up to 25 km/h

They can be driven without a license as long as the maximum design speed is up to 25 km/h and this is proven by the vehicle's registration license or technical data.

Minimum age: 15 years.

Lightweight skates

For the E.P.H.O. small category, a maximum speed of up to 6 km/h applies. The driver must be at least 12 years old.

Legal ID required for drivers over 12.

Great range of skates

Age 15 is required for skates up to 25 km/h. Drivers must wear a helmet and at night reflective clothing or equipment.

They do not circulate on roads with a speed limit of more than 50 km/h.

Bicycles

Drivers under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a person over the age of 16 when on the road. A helmet is recommended, while at night visible equipment is required.

An administrative fine may be imposed for violations.

Category AM

Papi, moped and light quadricycles

The AM category concerns small two-wheelers, three-wheelers and light four-wheelers with specific technical limits. The candidate can start from 16 years old with a guardian's signature or from 18 years old without a signature.

  • Light two-wheeled or three-wheeled moped with petrol engine up to 50 cc.
  • Maximum design speed up to 45 km/h.
  • Maximum continuous rated or net power up to 4 kW.
  • Corresponding limits apply for light quadricycles, with a mass of up to 425 kg.
  • The information must be entered on the registration certificate. If e.g. the power says 4.2 kW instead of 4 kW, it is not covered.

With an AM and a B license for at least 6 years, and as long as you are over 27 years old, you can drive a 125 cc motorcycle with an A1 code, under conditions and only when the AM appears on the license.
