What do the codes on the driver's license mean?

Codes on a driving license indicate medical restrictions, vehicle adaptations, administrative details or national restrictions. They appear next to license categories or on the last line when they apply to all categories.

Guide - Medical reasons, codes 01-05

1. Vision correction and/or protection

  • 01.1 Glasses.
  • 01.2 Contact lens(es).
  • 01.3 Protective glasses.

2. Hearing device / communication aid

05. Limited use

Mandatory use of a subcode when driving is restricted for medical reasons.

  • 05.01 Daytime driving only, e.g. one hour after sunrise and one hour before sunset.
  • 05.02 Driving only within a radius of the license holder's place of residence or only within the city / region.
  • 05.03 Driving without passengers.
  • 05.04 Driving at a speed up to a certain km/h.
  • 05.05 Driving permitted only accompanied by a driver's license holder.

43. Modified driver's seat

  • 43.01 Driver's seat at a height that allows good visibility and at the right distance from the steering wheel and foot control.
  • 43.02 Driver's seat adapted to the driver's body configuration.
  • 43.03 Driver's seat with lateral support for more stability.
  • 43.04 Driver's seat with armrests.
  • 43.05 Extending the displacement of the driver's seat longitudinally.
  • 43.06 Seat belt adjustment.
  • 43.07 Sag type safety belt, 4 points.

44. Motorcycle Modifications

For code 44, the use of a subcode is mandatory.

  • 44.1 With only one brake.
  • 44.2 Custom handbrake, front wheel.
  • 44.3 Custom foot brake, rear wheel.
  • 44.4 Custom accelerator handling.
  • 44.5 Custom manual transmission and manual clutch.
  • 44.6 Custom driving mirrors.
  • 44.7 Custom controls like turn indicators, brake light, etc.
  • 44.08 Seat height that allows the driver, in the sitting position, to have both feet on the road at the same time.

45, 50 and 51

  • 45 Motorcycle with canister, side car, only.
  • 50 Applies to specific vehicle / chassis number, vehicle identification number VIN.
  • 51 Applies to special vehicle / number plate, vehicle registration number VRN.
Administrative matters, codes 70-96
  • 70 Changing the license number issued by another country, with EU / UN distinguishing mark for a third country, e.g. 70.0123456789.NL.
  • 71 Copy of license number, with EU / UN distinguishing mark for a third country, e.g. 71.987654321.HR.
  • 72 Restriction to vehicle category A, maximum displacement 125 cm³ and maximum power output 11 kW, A1.
  • 73 Applies to vehicle category B motorized tricycle or quadricycle type B1.
  • 74 Applies to category C vehicles, the maximum permissible mass of which does not exceed 7,500 kg, C1.
  • 75 Applies to vehicle category D up to 16 seats, without the driver's seat, D1.
  • 76 Applies to category C vehicles, maximum permissible mass up to 7,500 kg, C1, which are coupled with a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the forming train does not exceed 12,000 kg and the maximum permissible mass of the trailer does not exceed the mass of the unladen towing vehicle, C1E.
  • 77 Applies to vehicle category D with up to 16 passenger seats, excluding the driver's seat, D1, which are coupled to a trailer with a maximum permissible mass of more than 750 kg, provided that the maximum permissible mass of the formation train does not exceed 12,000 kg, that the maximum permissible mass of the trailer does not exceed the unladen mass of the towing vehicle and that the trailer not used for the carriage of passengers, D1E.
  • 78 Applies only to vehicles without clutch pedal or hand lever for categories AM, A1, A2, A.
  • 79.(...) Applies to vehicles that are in accordance with the specifications in brackets, in the context of the application of article 10 par. 1 of Directive 1991/439/EEC.
  • 90.01 To the left.
  • 90.02 To the right.
  • 90.03 Left.
  • 90.04 Right.
  • 90.05 Hand.
  • 90.06 Foot.
  • 90.07 Usable.
  • 95 Driver holding PEI, who meets the obligation of professional competence mentioned in the P.D. 74/2008, Directive 2003/59/EC, until the indicated date, e.g. 95.(01.01.12), and has completed the training or has successfully passed a qualification and conduct test in accordance with the provisions of Annex V.
  • 96 A driver who has completed training or has successfully passed a qualification and conduct test in accordance with the provisions of Annex V.

When a driving license of a member state of the European Union or the states of Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein has the code 79 next to a category or subcategory, it means that the category or subcategory does not apply to all vehicles, but only to those mentioned in brackets. When exchanging the license to Greek, the specific category or subcategory is granted together with the code 79 and the indications of the bracket.

National code numbers 100 and above

Code numbers from 100 and above are national numbers. They are placed on the driving licenses granted or converted by the Greek services and are only valid on Greek territory.

  • 103 The license holder is monocular.
  • 105 The license holder is deaf and dumb.
  • 106 There is a restriction on extending the license to Group 2 categories for medical reasons.
  • 107 There is a time limit on the administrative validity of the license categories, for medical reasons.
  • 110 The license comes from a license conversion, which was granted by a Military Service or Security Forces Service.
  • 113 Category B also applies to driving E.D.X. car. This code is abolished from January 19, 2013.
  • 114 It is not allowed to drive buses, categories D1, D1E, D, DE, in a radius of more than 50 km from the seat of the vehicle. This code has been discontinued as of September 10, 2008.
  • 116 The license is granted with a limitation of the number of previous license categories.
  • 120 It is forbidden to carry out any professional activity, which requires the possession of a driving license of categories C, D, CE and DE. This code is removed from September 10, 2014.
  • 171 First copy of license due to loss, in any way.
  • 271 Second copy of license due to loss, in any way.
  • 371 Third copy of license due to loss, in any way, etc.

For code 114, once entered on a driving license of the above categories granted before 10 September 2008, it continues to be carried over to each new license form until the holder has completed 12 months of driving service, at which time the specific code is deleted.

When a code applies to all categories for which the license is issued, it is printed on the last line of page 2, under columns 9, 10 and 11.
